Are driving instructors self-employed for MTD?
Approved driving instructors are overwhelmingly self-employed, whether franchised or independent. That means your own records and, once your income is over the threshold, MTD for Income Tax.
When does MTD for Income Tax start for driving instructors?
If your gross income is over £50,000 it applies now, from 6 April 2026. Between £30,000 and £50,000, your start date is April 2027, and from April 2028 it drops to £20,000.
Is my franchise fee deductible?
Yes. If you work under a franchise, the weekly fee is a deductible business expense. You record your lesson income and claim the fee.
How is the dual-control car treated?
If you lease it, the payments are generally deductible; if you buy it, it's usually claimed through capital allowances. Fuel and running costs are recorded too. Your accountant can confirm the best method.
How do block-booked lessons work under quarterly reporting?
You record the income in line with your accounting basis. Clear Books keeps prepaid blocks organised so your quarterly updates stay consistent.
