Your records are yours to keep.

Without a franchise handling things, you keep more of each lesson but do your own admin. Good digital records of lessons, advertising and the car are what turn that into a quick quarterly update instead of a headache.

Your diary or booking app already logs lessons and payments. Bring the figures in and your updates stay quick.

When does MTD for Income Tax start for independent instructors?
If your gross income is over £50,000 it applies now, from 6 April 2026. Between £30,000 and £50,000, your start date is April 2027, and from April 2028 it drops to £20,000.
Can I claim advertising to find pupils?
Yes. Without a franchise supplying pupils, your advertising, from online ads to signage, is a deductible business expense.
How is my own car treated?
If you buy it, it's usually claimed through capital allowances, with fuel and running costs recorded separately. If you lease it, the payments are generally deductible.
Can my booking app records help?
Yes. Your diary or booking app already logs lessons and payments, a useful basis for your accounts. Bring the figures into Clear Books to keep updates quick.
What else can I claim?
