When does it start for me?

A lumpy, seasonal year

A big summer is fine under quarterly updates.

Landscaping income swings with the seasons. Quarterly updates report each quarter as it comes, and the final declaration reconciles the whole year, so a quiet winter never trips you up.

The bits specific to your trade.

Plant and machinery

Hire is a deductible cost; larger kit bought outright goes through capital allowances. Record both so nothing is missed.

Seasonal income

A summer peak and a quiet winter are normal. Quarterly updates report it as it happens; the year reconciles at the final declaration.

Maintenance retainers

Regular garden or grounds maintenance is steady, invoiced income sitting alongside one-off builds in the same update.

Waste and tip fees

Green-waste disposal and tip fees add up. Snap the receipts so your expenses stay complete.

Common questions

Landscaper MTD FAQ.

When does MTD for Income Tax start for landscapers?
If your gross income is over £50,000 it applies now, from 6 April 2026. Between £30,000 and £50,000, your start date is April 2027, and from April 2028 the threshold drops to £20,000.
My income is very seasonal, how does quarterly reporting handle that?
Each quarterly update reflects that quarter, so a busy summer is higher than a quiet winter. Your final declaration reconciles the year and tax is based on annual profit.
Can I claim plant and machinery hire?
Yes. Plant and machinery hire is deductible. Larger machinery bought outright is usually claimed through capital allowances instead.
How do maintenance retainers fit in?
Regular retainers are steady income you record as you invoice, sitting alongside lumpier one-off builds in the same quarterly update.
What else can I claim?
Typical costs include materials and plants, plant and tool hire, fuel, green-waste disposal and tip fees, your van or truck, PPE and insurance.
