For food delivery drivers & riders

MTD for Income Tax for food delivery drivers & riders.

Delivering by bike or car across one or more apps, with a big gap between gross earnings and take-home. Many riders do it part-time, so here's how Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to you, and when it starts.

When does it start for me?

It's your gross earnings that decide it.

MTD for Income Tax phases in by gross income before costs. Delivery has a big gross-to-profit gap, so it's worth checking your total earnings across every app.

Gross, not take-home

Your earnings are bigger than your profit.

Fuel, the bike or car and insurance take a big bite, so your gross earnings are well above your take-home. The threshold looks at the gross figure, and with apps now reporting earnings to HMRC, keeping your own records matters more than ever.

Gross versus profit

Costs take a big bite, so the threshold can be closer than your take-home suggests. Record earnings and costs to be taxed on profit.

Multi-app

Each app is a separate income source. Reconciled together, they total into one quarterly update.

Records that match

With apps reporting to HMRC, keeping your own figures accurate means everything reconciles cleanly.

Bike or car costs

Fuel or mileage, upkeep and insurance are deductible. Choose your method and keep the records.

Common questions

Food delivery MTD FAQ.

When does MTD for Income Tax start for food delivery drivers?
It depends on your gross income before costs. Over £30,000 it starts from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028; over £50,000 it applies now. Many riders deliver part-time, and the position under £20,000 is still under government review.
Is the threshold based on my earnings or my profit?
On gross earnings before costs. Delivery has a big gap between gross and profit once fuel, the vehicle and insurance are counted, so you can be closer to the threshold than your take-home suggests.
Does the app report my earnings to HMRC?
Yes. Digital platforms report the earnings of the people who deliver through them to HMRC, tightened from April 2026. Keeping your own records means your figures line up with what HMRC holds.
I deliver for more than one app, how does that work?
Each app is a separate income source, but they add together for the threshold and reporting. Clear Books brings your earnings from every app into one running record and one quarterly update.
What can I claim?
Depending on your vehicle, typical costs include fuel or mileage, the bike or car and its upkeep, insurance, your phone and data, and equipment such as a thermal bag.
