Supply-and-fit means bigger turnover.

When you supply the flooring as well as fit it, the materials pass through your takings and count towards the threshold. Recording your purchases as expenses keeps your tax based on the fitting margin.

Supply and fit

When you supply the flooring, it's income and an expense. Record both so you're taxed on the fitting margin.

Offcuts and waste

The flooring you buy is a cost whether it's laid or wasted. Recording the purchase means waste is already reflected.

Showroom subcontracting

Fitting for a retailer is income. If they supply materials, only your fee counts; if you supply too, the full charge does.

Near the £30k line

Supply-and-fit can push your gross over £30,000 quickly. Tidy records mean you'll know the moment you tip into scope.

Common questions

Flooring fitter MTD FAQ.

When does MTD for Income Tax start for flooring fitters?
If your gross income is over £50,000 it applies now, from 6 April 2026. Between £30,000 and £50,000, your start date is April 2027, and from April 2028 the threshold drops to £20,000.
How is materials markup treated?
The full amount you charge, fitting plus marked-up flooring, is your income, and the materials you buy are an expense. Recording both means you're taxed on the profit.
Can I account for offcuts and waste?
The flooring you buy is an expense whether it's laid or becomes offcut. You record the purchase, so waste is naturally reflected in your costs.
I fit for showrooms as a subcontractor, how does that work?
Fitting work paid by a showroom is income. If they supply materials, only your fitting fee is income; if you supply too, the full charge is income and the materials are an expense.
What else can I claim?
Typical costs include flooring and underlay, adhesive and trims, knee pads and tools, your van and fuel, and public liability insurance.
